Broos Finds Solution To Bafana’s Left Centre-Back Conundrum

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has breathed a sigh of relief after finding a solution to the team’s long-standing left centre-back problem.

For years, Broos has struggled to find a reliable left-footed centre-back, often relying on right-footed players like Mothobi Mvala and Grant Kekana. Last year, Broos decided to call Kaizer Chiefs’ left centre-back Rushwin Dortley, but unfortunately, this year he suffered an injury.

However, recent call-ups to the national team have brought new hope, with young players Khulumani Ndamane and Mbekezeli Mbokazi impressing in their positions.

The duo’s performances in the international friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique have been outstanding, with Ndamane even winning the Man of the Match award against Tanzania.

Broos praised the pair, saying that having left-footed centre-backs would reduce problems in the game.

“We’ve been looking for left centre-backs, and now in this camp, we’ve found that, and it’s good because right-footed players playing in the left centre-back position can give us trouble in some moments of the game,” Broos explained.

While Broos is optimistic about the future, he remains cautious about the players’ long-term prospects.

“I don’t want to tell you that they will be there in September, but we have solutions, and we’ll see in September what we can do,” he said.

The September matches are the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, where Bafana Bafana will face tough competition.

Broos also praised Nkosinathi Sibisi, who was given the captain’s armband against Mozambique. Sibisi’s leadership style is quiet yet effective, earning respect not only from his teammates.

“You know, sometimes leadership is not always about a big mouth,” Broos said.

“Sibisi has been with us from the first day I’m here, and I know this guy – there’s no better professional than him. The attitude he has earns respect from his teammates.”

Sibisi’s appointment as captain is a testament to his hard work and dedication. Broos believes that Sibisi’s calm and professional approach makes him an ideal leader for the team.
