Broos Fires Mbule Warning: This Is Your Last Chance
Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, has heaped praise on midfielder Sipho Mbule, saying he has grabbed his chance with both hands after playing a crucial role in the team’s win over Rwanda in their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification match at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
Mbule, who was part of Broos’ squad when he arrived in South Africa in 2021, had been out of the national team picture for some time due to disciplinary issues and a lack of game time.
However, after joining Orlando Pirates during the off-season, Mbule has rediscovered his form and caught the eye of Broos, who included him in the Bafana squad in September.
“Sipho was with us from the first day I was here, and immediately I saw what a good player he was, but Sipho had other interests than football,” Broos said.
“And after a few times, I didn’t call him anymore. When you see the career of Sipho, he played for Mamelodi Sundowns, he plays for Orlando Pirates, he plays for the big teams, and see what a career he has.”
Broos revealed that he had considered Mbule as a replacement for Themba Zwane, but had doubts about his commitment. However, after discussions with his assistant coach, HelmanMkhalele, they decided to give Mbule a chance.
“So, when we were looking for a replacement for Themba, okay, we tried Patrick Maswanganyi, and then we were talking about Sipho,” Broos explained.
“I said, yeah, but Sipho, you see, how is he playing, he had a good moment in Sekhukhune United [on loan last season from Sundowns], but then it was again like that. So, we talked about him, Helman and me, and we said, okay, we will give him a chance.”
The Belgian mentor told Mbule that this was his second chance, and if he didn’t grab it, he would not be considered for the national team again.
“And from the first minute when he came with us, I called him and I said to him, ‘listen, man, this is your second chance, after this, it is finished, it’s up to you,’” Broos said.
“’I give you a chance, if you don’t grab it with your two hands, it’s done. You will not ever be with Bafana Bafana as long as I’m coach.
“’But don’t forget there is an AFCON in December and maybe a World Cup in July next year, do you want to be there?’ He said, ‘yes.’ I said, ‘okay, show me.’”
The former Cameroon national team coach added that he never doubted Mbule’s talent despite that he was not including him in the squad for the past four years.
“I never doubted his football qualities, but you saw how he’s fighting, how he’s running, and if you have the talent of Sipho, yeah, then you can be very happy as a coach,” Broos added.
The 73-year-old tactician was full of praise for Mbule’s performance, saying, “And I told him after the game, I said, ‘You grabbed your chance, congratulations for that.’”
With the AFCON tournament just around the corner, Mbule will be hoping to continue impressing Broos and secure a spot in the Bafana Bafana squad.
