Broos: Maybe Mofokeng Might Be The Guy…

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he named exciting youngster Relebohile Mofokeng in his squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe because he has had no dips in his form.

Mofokeng’s impressive form throughout the season, without any significant dips, convinced Broos to give him a chance at the international level.

The 19-year-old attacker has been a standout player for Orlando Pirates this season, featuring in 37 matches across all competitions.

He’s contributed directly to goals by scoring four and assisting six. This consistent performance, highlighted by Broos as “no down moments,” earned him a nomination for the Young Player of the Season award.

“He has something, you can’t explain it, but he is always there,” Broos said. “He is not only doing his offensive work, he’s also doing defensive work. We are not asking for defending and tackling no, positioning he is good.”

While acknowledging Mofokeng’s age and lack of international experience, Broos sees him as a valuable option for specific situations. “He will not be with us as a standard player but maybe when things don’t go well in a game, you can put him in the last 20 minutes something, maybe he is some guy who can force something,” explained Broos.

Broos anticipates a challenging encounter against Nigeria due to their physicality. “Logically, against Nigeria team, it will be very difficult for him,” Broos admitted. However, he sees a potential role for Mofokeng in the Zimbabwe match. “The game against Zimbabwe might be a situation where we may not find the space, things to make goals, maybe he is the guy who can be in action and do something,” Broos said.

Mofokeng will need to maintain his impressive form, or even elevate it, before linking up with the national team. This crucial test comes on Saturday when Orlando Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final at Mbombela Stadium (15:00).
