Broos: The 5-0 Will Be Forgotten Tomorrow

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says the 5-0 hammering of Congo in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night will be forgotten on Saturday.
While the emphatic win was a morale booster, Broos emphasized that the team must remain focused on their ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Bafana led with three goals in the first with goals by Teboho Mokoena (brace) and Bathusi Aubaas.
Lyle Foster got on the act in the second and he was joined in the party by Iqraam Rayners, who accepted a gift from Uganda Christopher Henri, who appeared to be out of place in the game.
“I can only be happy after a performance like this,” said Broos on SABC Sport after the game.
However, fans spoiled the game after the second goal as they invaded the pitch to celebrate and the referee ordered the game to stop at 19:30 after 28 minutes were played. Bafana players stood inside the pitch.
Minister Mckenzie along with SAFA head honchos led by Danny Jordaan came to the pitch to urge fans to stop coming to the pitch. The reason to stop the game was the concern about the amount of security at the match which was deemed not sufficient.
Security personnel along with police was beefed up and the game resumed 19 minutes later.
“I was a little bit afraid after 25 minutes when the referee decided to stop the game (due fans invasion) because we had a good momentum.
“You never know after the break of 10 or 15 minutes, but the boys took off immediately with the same mentality they had from the beginning of the game. It was just a fantastic game and fantastic performance also.”
This was the first time Bafana led 3-0 at halftime in an AFCON qualifier since 13 October 2018 against Seychelles at FNB Stadium, a match they went on to win 6-0. Mokoena also scored on that.
They also scored three unanswered goals against Burkina Faso in 2017 during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
This win has seen Bafana go top of Group K on goal difference after Uganda beat South Sudan 1-0 earlier on Saturday, But Broos said their focus is now on Tuesday’s return match.
“Tuesday is another match,” said Broos.
“The 5-0 tomorrow will be forgotten because Tuesday we have another game. We will try to achieve six points out of six and come back from Congo with the qualification. But it will be a different game, different pitch also.
“So, we will see. But if we can do the same performance we did today, we can win the game, and let’s hope we can achieve that.”
