Buthelezi Pens Emotional Farewell Message

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi has penned an emotional farewell message to the Buccaneers after the club officially confirmed his departure on Friday, bringing an end to a three-year spell marked by silverware, perseverance and personal growth.

The Nquthu-born goalkeeper joined Pirates ahead of the 2023/24 season after completing a move from TS Galaxy.

Although opportunities were limited during his time at the Soweto giants, Buthelezi remained a committed member of the squad under former head coach Jose Riveiro and, later, Abdeslam Ouaddou.

The 28-year-old made 22 appearances in all competitions during his three seasons with the Buccaneers, keeping 12 clean sheets.

His game time became even more limited last season under Ouaddou, as he did not feature in a single Betway Premiership match, with first-choice goalkeeper Sipho Chaine starting all 30 league fixtures.

Despite his limited appearances, Buthelezi leaves the Buccaneers with an impressive collection of major honours, having helped the club win two MTN8 titles, the Nedbank Cup, the Carling Knockout and the Betway Premiership.

Following the announcement of his departure, Buthelezi took to Instagram to express his gratitude to everyone associated with the club.

“To the Orlando Pirates family, it’s never easy to say goodbye to a place that has shaped you in so many ways,” Buthelezi wrote.

“I want to thank everyone at Orlando Pirates for believing in me and allowing me to wear this badge. It has truly been an honour. Thank you to the coaches, management, technical team, my teammates and the supporters who stood by me throughout my journey.

“This journey wasn’t always easy. There were good days, difficult days, moments of joy and moments that tested me. Through it all, I grew not only as a footballer but also as a person. Every challenge taught me something, and every great moment made me stronger.

“To the supporters, thank you for your love, your patience and your encouragement. Your support never went unnoticed, and I will always carry it with me.

“As I begin a new chapter, I leave with nothing but gratitude, beautiful memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. Orlando Pirates will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything.”
