Cardoso: “Fine Margins” Will Decide Champions League Semi

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has offered key tactical insights ahead of the second leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final against ES Esperance.

The South African champions host the Tunisian giants at Loftus Versfeld this Saturday afternoon, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.

Sundowns enter the home leg carrying a slender but vital 1-0 lead following their hard-fought victory in Tunis last week. While the result provides the Brazilians with a psychological edge, Cardoso warned that the tie remains on a knife-edge.

A Growing Continental Rivalry

This encounter marks the third consecutive season these two heavyweights have clashed in the competition’s knockout stages. In 2024, Esperance eliminated Sundowns in the semi-finals; in 2025, Sundowns exacted revenge by knocking the Tunisians out in the quarter-finals. This “rubber match” adds a layer of intense rivalry to an already high-stakes showdown.

Cardoso believes tactical discipline and defensive concentration will be the deciding factors, particularly given the offensive potency of both squads.

“I think both teams have the capacity to score goals in every match they play. It’s very rare to see Espérance keep a clean sheet, and equally rare for Sundowns,” he said.

“So, we need to understand that while it’s possible—we did it in the previous match—there is still a lot of work to be done. Keeping a clean sheet requires discipline, concentration, attention to detail, hard running, and strong control of possession.

“Both teams will try to avoid suffering, and both will look to ensure that key moments in the game fall in their favour, and then manage the match from there.”

Looking ahead to the tactical battle, the Portuguese mentor expects a highly strategic contest filled with quality from both teams.

“I expect a very tactical match, played by excellent players on both sides, with different characteristics, styles of play, and approaches to attacking and defending. That doesn’t mean one is better or worse, or right or wrong,” Cardoso added.

“The margins in these matches are very small, so I expect another game decided by fine details. In the last match, those details went our way—hopefully that happens again.

“It means we still have a lot to do to make it happen. Our focus, intention, and mindset must be to approach the game with humility, discipline, seriousness, and professionalism until the very last minute, and then handle whatever comes in the right way.”
