Cardoso: People Must Understand We Are Rebuilding

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on the team’s rebuilding process following their goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

The Brazilians have struggled to replicate their form from last season, with two wins and two draws in their four league games this season.

Sundowns currently sit in third position with eight points in the Betway Premiership, and they’ve also been knocked out in the MTN8 by Orlando Pirates last weekend.

“Everybody wants to win every match, but no team wins every match,” Cardoso said after the match on Wednesday.

“And if you’re really fair to people working at MamelodiSundowns, you will understand that the team that played in the Club World Cup is not the same team that is playing now.”

Cardoso emphasized that the absence of key players like Lucas Ribeiro, Khuliso Mudau, and Themba Zwane has had a significant impact on the team, necessitating a rebuild.

“The impacts of the absence of key players were so big in the team, and we need to rebuild,” Cardoso explained.

“I think the rebuild we’re busy with is done with players who are some young and didn’t play last season.”

Despite the challenges, Cardoso expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, highlighting their commitment to the rebuilding process.

“But I think we’re happy to rebuild in that way, and we know we’ll arrive where we want to arrive because we know our direction,” Cardoso said.

“I think we’re committed to that work as a club, and believe me, we’ll become stronger and see many victories.”

The Portuguese mentor also acknowledged that Sundowns’ schedule has been demanding, but credited the support from the club and fans for their strength.

“But it’s not easy for the team to build in this schedule that we have, and I would like to see other teams have this schedule that we’re having, then see what results they would face,” Cardoso said.

“But we’re strong, and my strength comes from the support that I have from the club and also from the fans.”

The 53-year-old highlighted the commitment of the coaching staff, management, and board of directors as a key factor in the team’s strength.

“That is the strength that Mamelodi Sundowns has, and I’m talking about the big commitment that we have inside the locker room from coaching staff, management, and board of directors,” he said.

With their next game against Stellenbosch at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, Sundowns will look to continue their rebuilding process and climb the log table.

Cardoso’s team will aim to secure a win and build momentum as they navigate the demanding schedule.
