Broos Explains Petersen’s Bafana Snub

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has stated that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, despite his impressive form, is not currently a better option than his three chosen goalkeepers for the national team.

Broos made the comments while announcing his final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria on Thursday, to be played from 5-9 September at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

A Matter of Competition, Not Ability

Petersen has been in excellent form this season, keeping four clean sheets in the opening league matches, including a goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, Broos explained that his current goalkeeping trio of Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine, and Ricardo Goss are his preferred choices.

“I knew there was a time in the beginning when I was here, we had really researched for good goalkeepers,” Broos said.

“There were [Ronwen] Williams who was there, Goss was still in Sundowns, second or third goalkeeper. Sipho Chane, nobody knew him Yeah.

“So now we have those three, [we are secured]. We have [Renaldo] Leaner. We have now Petersen. When I see the progression of Peterson, comparing with the previous season, we have another good keeper.

“But yeah, I can’t select three. So, I know, maybe the performances he is showing at Chiefs for the moment, yeah, he deserves it also.”

Broos acknowledged Petersen’s recent performances, noting his progression compared to last season. “He deserves it, but I can’t put out Goss, or I can’t put out Williams, or I can’t even put out Chaine,” he stated, encouraging Petersen to remain patient and hope for a future opportunity.

Chasing World Cup Qualification

The national team will be looking to continue their strong home record in the World Cup qualifiers, as they have not lost at home since 2017, with the last loss coming against Senegal.

Wins against Lesotho and Nigeria would bring Bafana Bafana closer to securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
