Cardoso Surprised By Pirates Fans Backing Gallants

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso admitted he was surprised to see Orlando Pirates supporters cheering on Marumo Gallants during their clash, calling it a unique experience in his Premier Soccer League journey.

Sundowns secured a 3-1 victory over Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, moving two points clear at the top of the table. Pirates slipped to second place following the result.

A number of Pirates fans were present at the stadium, hoping Gallants could pull off a surprise result after the Soweto giants dropped points against Siwelele over the weekend.

The Brazilians now sit on 50 points after 21 matches, with Pirates on 48, in what has become a tightly contested title race between two of South Africa’s most successful clubs.

“You saw Pirates fans trying to support Marumo Gallants. We are going to fight until the end,” said Cardoso.

“It’s normal, it is even beautiful. I’ve said South Africa is giving me so many experiences I’ve never had, and this is another one.

“It’s sport, and this is also beautiful to see.”

Cardoso warns against complacency

Despite opening a two-point gap at the summit, Cardoso cautioned his players against becoming complacent.

“It is more comfortable now than yesterday because Orlando Pirates were a point ahead,” he said.

“It is more comfortable than two days ago when we were one point behind, but it is really not a comfortable place to be.

“If we think it is comfortable, we will fall into a trap for sure. No, it is not comfortable. It is what it is — we need to keep fighting.

“Of course, it is a good position heading into the FIFA break, to feel that positive energy. But there is still a lot to do.

“If we think what we have done will speak for us, that is wrong. What will speak is what we do in the next match. We must stay focused — both in the Champions League and the league.

“Any other attitude will take us in the wrong direction, and I don’t want that for this team.

“I asked the players at half-time, ‘What are you thinking about? The Champions League match?’ Winning today helps us prepare well, but we must not take anything for granted because nothing is guaranteed.”

Focus shifts to CAF Champions League

Sundowns now turn their attention to the CAF Champions League quarter-final second leg against Stade Malien on Sunday.

The South African champions hold a commanding 3-0 advantage from the first leg and will be aiming to finish the job and secure a place in the semi-finals.
