Chiefs Add Former Pirates Left-Back

Kaizer Chiefs has confirmed the signing left-back Bongani Sam.

Amakhosi have handed the former left-back a three-year contract with an option to renew.

Chiefs needed a left-back after they released Sifiso Hlanti at the end of last term. Sam has been signed on the same day as Gaston Sirino.

“Kaizer Chiefs have added another player to their squad with defender Bongani Sam joining the team from Orlando Pirates,” said Chiefs in a statement on Saturday.

“The Glamour Boys have secured the 26-year-old left-back/winger on a 3-year contract, with a 1-year option.”

However, the former Orlando Pirates defender was seen a few weeks ago wearing a protective boot on his left foot, alongside Edmilson Dove, who is also nursing an injury to the same foot.

Dove and Sam returned to South Africa from Chiefs’ pre-season camp in Turkey, where the squad was being assessed by their new coach, Nasreddine Nabi.

At that time, Chiefs could not comment on Sam’s injury because he was not officially signed.

Sam has been without a club since leaving Moroka Swallows in December. His last appearance came against Royal AM in December of last year at Harry Gwala Stadium.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic and Maritzburg United left-back has featured in 88 matches in all competitions, scoring five goals along with four assists.
