Chiefs And Stellenbosch Drawn In Tough Confed Cup Groups

Kaizer Chiefs have been handed a tough draw in the CAF Confederation Cup, which includes two Egyptian sides.
Amakhosi, who have reached the group stages of the Confederation Cup for the first time since the competition was rebranded in 2004, will face Zamalek, ZESCO United, and Al Masry in Group D.
Interestingly, when Mamelodi Sundowns won the CAF Champions League in 2016, they faced ZESCO United in the semi-finals before defeating Zamalek in the two-legged final.
Last season, Stellenbosch FC, on their way to reaching the Confederation Cup semi-finals, also knocked out Zamalek in the quarter-finals — a result that led to the sacking of former Nigeria coach José Peseiro.
Steve Barker’s Stellenbosch side, who lost in the semi-finals to Simba SC of Tanzania last season, also learned their fate in this year’s competition.
They were drawn in Group C alongside AS Otoho (Congo Brazzaville), Singida Black Stars (Tanzania), and CR Belouizdad (Algeria).
The last South African team to reach the Confederation Cup final was Orlando Pirates in the 2021/22 season, when they lost to Moroccan side RS Berkane on penalties in Nigeria.
The CAF Confederation Cup group stage matches are scheduled to take place later this November.
