Chiefs Closing In On First DDC Title, Sundowns Overcome Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs moved within touching distance of claiming their maiden DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] title with a convincing 3-1 victory over Richards Bay at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday, with three games left to play for the Naturena side.

Goals from Imaad Hendricks, Neo Bohloko, and Naledi Hlongwane, who scored his 12th goal of the season, saw Amakhosi take their points tally to 61 after playing 25 matches with a game in hand over second-placed Stellenbosch FC.

Stellies are breathing down on Chiefs’ neck with 60 points accumulated in 26 games following a 2-0 win against AmaZulu on the same day as talented speedy winger Cheswyn Philander also netted his 12th goal of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns stretched their winning streak to four games at the expense of Orlando Pirates with a narrow 1-0 triumph at Isak Steyl Stadium. David Notoane’s men have picked up 54 points and are in third place in the PSL reserve league standings.

For Joseph Makhanya’s troops, the title is all but gone after managing to gather 47 points in 27 league outings. The Buccaneers’ campaign will conclude on Saturday, 26 April, with a visit from Bernard Parker’s TS Galaxy.

In Bloemfontein, SuperSport United were subjected to a 6-2 thrashing by Marumo Gallants – a result that saw the Tshwane outfit extend its winless run to four games. Matsatsantsa remained stagnant in fifth place with 45 points after 26 outings.

On the other hand, Cape Town City settled for a share of the spoils with Sekhukhune United in a goalless bore draw, while Chippa United and Magesi FC couldn’t be separated as they played out to a 2-2 stalemate in the relegation battle.

Keen to register a respectable finish, Golden Arrows created a gap between themselves and the bottom places as they increased their points tally to 25 but remained in 11th place after overcoming Polokwane City 2-1. Rise and Shine are winless in their last four matches.
