Chiefs Pummel SuperSport In The Carling Cup

Kaizer Chiefs delivered a dominant performance, crushing SuperSport United 4-0 in the first round of the Carling Knockout Cup at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

Chiefs appear to be thriving under new coach Nasreddine Nabi, who was appointed during the offseason. This victory marked their third win in four matches across all competitions.

While the win delighted their starved fans, it took some time for Chiefs to settle into the game and create scoring opportunities.

Wandile Dube had a chance to open the scoring in the 29th minute, but his shot struck the crossbar and bounced on top of the line. Tashreeq Morris, a recent signing for SuperSport, also saw his header hit the upright.

However, Chiefs would break the deadlock. Gaston Sirino, a former Mamelodi Sundowns standout, cut inside and beat SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss with a well-placed shot in the 33rd minute.

Ranga Chivaviro missed a golden opportunity to double Chiefs’ lead in the added time of the first half, dragging his shot wide of the near post.

Chiefs extended their lead in the second half. Sirino, from the goal scorer, turned provider, delivering a corner that Yusuf Maart converted with a header.

Duba continued to impress, creating another chance for Chivaviro, but the striker failed to capitalize. However, Chivaviro made amends, firing the third goal for Chiefs with a powerful shot from outside the box.

SuperSport’s Gape Moralo received a second yellow card in the 80th minute, making the task even more difficult. Chiefs dominated the remaining minutes, with Ashley Du Preez scoring the fourth goal following a pass from Edson Castillo.

This victory marks a significant improvement from Chiefs’ previous poor showing in this competition, where they were eliminated in the same stage by AmaZulu last season.

In another match, Cape Town City defeated Royal AM 3-0 at Athlone Stadium.

Chiefs, along with Stellenbosch, Magesi, Marumo Gallants, Mamelodi Sundowns, and City, have advanced to the quarterfinals. The draw for the quarterfinals will take place after the final match on Sunday between TS Galaxy and Chippa United, and Richards Bay and Sekhukhune United.
