Chiefs’ Top Eight Hopes Suffer Another Dent

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Marumo Gallants in their Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Saturday, denting their hope of finishing in the top eight.

Glody Lilepo’s stunning goal gave Amakhosi an early lead in the first when he cut inside and fired past Washington Arubi, but Trevor Mathiane’s strike in the 41st minute when he hooked the ball to level the scores before halftime.

The match was evenly contested thereafter, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. Gallants’ Daniel Msendami sealed the win with a well-crafted free-kick in the 70th minute, which eluded everyone in the box and embarrassed Bruce Bvuma in the goals.

Chiefs coach Nassredine Nabi made tactical substitutions, introducing Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, and later Tebogo Potsane and Edson Castillo. Potsane, who had a noticeable impact, nearly scored in the 75th minute, but his shot was blocked.

Despite their efforts, Amakhosi couldn’t find an equalizer. Arubi made a crucial save in the 88th minute to deny Castillo’s header that he dug out in the box.

This loss extends Chiefs’ winless streak, with their last league victory coming on March 4 against Magesi at FNB Stadium. Their next match is against Orlando Pirates on May 3 at FNB Stadium.

It is why coach Nabi rested some of the senior players in mind for the Soweto Derby match, which has been a sold-out affair at the same venue next weekend.

The defeat highlights the challenges facing Amakhosi, who will need to regroup and reassess their strategy to return to winning ways against Pirates.
