Costa’s Stunning Strike Sees Sundowns Edge Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns have cemented their dominance at the top of the Betway Premiership, extending their lead to 18 points with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at a packed Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa, a strong contender for PSL Footballer of the Year, scored a spectacular goal in the first half, volleying the ball into the roof of the net past Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.

With this win, Sundowns now have 54 points from 20 matches. They have played five more games than second-placed Orlando Pirates, who faced Marumo Gallants at Toyota Stadium later on Saturday.

Pirates could reduce the gap to 15 points with a win in Bloemfontein, with four games in hand.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi made a bold decision by starting the experienced Edmilson Dove at left-back and giving him the captain’s armband. Dove, recently recovered from injury, was making his first appearance of the season.

Nabi’s tactical approach aimed to solidify his team’s defense and neutralize Sundowns’ potent attack.

Chiefs started brightly, creating early chances. Mdu Shabalala missed a golden opportunity in the first half, failing to capitalize on a promising attack.

Against a clinical side like Sundowns, missed chances often prove costly. Moments later, Sundowns punished Chiefs. A swift counter-attack, initiated just as Chiefs were looking to find Iqraam Rayners in the box, led to Ribeiro Costa’s decisive goal in the 41st minute.

Costa’s 12th league goal extended his lead in the scoring charts. He expertly controlled the ball and fired it past Bvuma.

Glody Lilepo responded for Chiefs, using his pace to beat Lucas Suarez on the right wing, but his cross failed to find a teammate.

That single goal separated the teams at halftime.

Costa almost turned provider, releasing Peter Shalulile, but the pass was slightly overhit.

Chiefs appeared to match Sundowns in the second half, effectively closing down space. The match became a tactical battle.

Sundowns suffered a setback when Khuliso Mudau, recently returning from injury, was forced off. Coach Miguel Cardoso opted for caution, replacing the Bafana Bafana international, who was being observed by national team coach Hugo Broos.

Broos may have been pleased to see Mudau start but disappointed to see him leave the field prematurely.

Sundowns had a chance to increase their lead when Bvuma blocked Rayners’ cross, and Teboho Mokoena’s follow-up shot was saved by Bvuma’s legs.

Costa and Rayners combined well, but Rayners’ shot went wide.

Chiefs’ Mfundo Vilakazi delivered a lofted pass to Ashley du Preez, but his stretching header lacked accuracy.

Sundowns held on for the victory, continuing their pursuit of an eighth consecutive league title. Coach Cardoso and his staff celebrated another crucial win.
