Da Cruz Addresses Lilepo’s Looming Chiefs Exit

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has provided an update on the future of Glody Lilepo, revealing that the attacker has a unique opportunity elsewhere and is currently in discussions with the club.

Lilepo was notably absent from Chiefs’ pre-season training camp in Spain as he and management evaluated his options.

Reports suggest the Congolese winger is attracting interest from several North African clubs, though no deal has been finalized. However, all indications point to an unsettled player, making a summer exit the most sensible outcome for both parties.

“Regarding Lilepo, he has a unique opportunity, and management is open to discussions with him,” Da Cruz stated via a translator during Friday’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s Toyota Cup clash against Zimbabwean side Scottland at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Da Cruz—who succeeded co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze during the off-season—has already overseen several transfer moves.

Amakhosi have signed Renaldo Leaner from Sekhukhune United, Thabo Moloisane from Stellenbosch FC, Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from Tanzanian giants Azam FC, and triggered the option to make Khanyisa Mayo’s loan move from CR Belouizdad permanent.

Despite these additions, Da Cruz believes the squad still requires reinforcement after finishing third last season to secure CAF Confederation Cup qualification.

“We need four more positions filled—a striker, two wingers, and an attacking midfielder,” Da Cruz explained.

“We have good player profiles at the moment, but I have requested different profiles from management so we can adapt our style of play throughout the season.”

The French-speaking strategist has already made tough personnel decisions, explicitly confirming that midfielder Thabo Cele—who was also omitted from the pre-season tour to Spain—is surplus to requirements.
