De Jong Explains Pirates Move As He Targets FIFA World Cup Spot

Orlando Pirates attacker Andre de Jong has revealed the reason behind his decision to join the club, noting that it aligns perfectly with his ambition of making it to the final selection of the New Zealand national squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

De Jong was signed from Stellenbosch FC in the recent January transfer window and has since been featured in three games for the Soweto Giants, and has found the back of the net only once.

The 29-year-old left Stellies after delivering outstanding performances, contributing 19 goals and 11 assists in 114 appearances.

De Jong revealed that one of the reasons he joined Pirates is to boost his career, and also because the club has won many trophies in the past, which is something he wants to be part of.

“Obviously, when Pirates first showed interest, it was a very exciting move for me. I think it really pushes my aspirations to make the New Zealand World Cup team, it’s one of my big goals, and also because Pirates have also collected a lot of trophies in the past,” said De Jong.

“So, joining an establishment like this can only be good for my career, and hopefully I can contribute to the team winning more trophies.”

De Jong further expressed his ambition to make the final squad selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Obviously, being called up in the last two windows, and hopefully I can get a call-up on that. There are a couple of games in New Zealand that will be really great to be involved in and push for that final call in May,” he said.

“So it’s really exciting for New Zealand football, similarly to South Africa, being back in the World Cup for the first time since 2010, so big opportunity to be involved in that.”

The New Zealand-born player added that he’s currently enjoying his time at Pirates.

“So far it’s been very enjoyable,” De Jong stated.

“It’s always tough to move mid-season, but the players have been very hospitable to me, as well as the technical team.

“And I think I’m finding my feet nicely, looking forward to a big couple of weeks ahead, but so far I’ve enjoyed Johannesburg and the team.”
