Duduzani Zuma To Ride In The AmaShova 2024

Former South African President Jacob Zuma’s son, Duduzani, has announced his participation in the country’s oldest classic cycling event, the 38th Amashova, which will take place on 20 October in Durban.

Duduzani expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge, stating, “I’ve been cycling my whole life, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. I’m not a professional rider, but I’m confident that I can complete the chosen distance within the allotted time. We’re generally in good shape.”

Celebrating nearly four decades of history, the Amashova organizers have introduced exciting updates and partnerships to elevate this year’s race.

To recognize cyclists’ dedication and skill, the prize money for the 106km race has been doubled to R50,000 for both men and women, making it an even more attractive challenge.

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has partnered with Amashova to promote road safety among cyclists. Through initiatives that provide information, helmets, and reflective bibs to over 8,000 cyclists annually, RAF aims to reduce accidents and fatalities on the roads.

Cyclists are urged to stay visible and vigilant, especially with changing seasons and weather conditions.

Amashova has joined forces with various esteemed partners, including uMngeni Municipality, Durban Tourism, Community Schemes Ombud Service (CSOS), Discovery Vitality, Netstar, Bluff Meat Supply, HollywoodBets, and aQuellé, to enhance the event experience for all participants.

Cycle Lab is offering an R200 voucher for riding the Amashova, with an additional R200 for early bird entries. Team Vitality members can enjoy a 50% discount on their race entry fee and exclusive post-race hospitality perks.

“I want to gather information and contribute as much as possible,” added Zuma to Sportswire. “We want to be practical and involved, rather than just theoretical. Whenever you see us, we speak from authority because we’ve participated. We’re here as enthusiastic sportspeople and to experience this unique event for the first time.”

This year, the Amashova National Classic will be broadcast live on Supersport, offering viewers a comprehensive visual experience. The seven-hour broadcast will cover all race categories, highlight water stations and activation points along the route, and conclude at the official Amashova home, Tsogo Sun (The Globe), with prize-giving.

To streamline the event experience, Amashova offers bus and bicycle transport services, as well as a chauffeur service from Howick to Durban for added convenience.

Timing services by FinishTime ensure accurate results, while Emit Reversing Time handles logistics for race number collection and delivery.

Participants can choose from four race distances – 132km, 106km, 65km, or 38km – all with full road closures to ensure a safe and exhilarating cycling experience.

Number collections, water points, and post-race activities will be strategically placed to support cyclists throughout the race.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or an enthusiastic newcomer, the Amashova National Classic promises an unforgettable journey filled with camaraderie, competition, and a sense of community.
