Durban City Topple Milford As Spurs Continue Winless Streak

Durban City ascended to the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings following a 3-0 victory over Leruma United thanks to a Samkelo Maseko brace and Saziso Magawana goal at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Milford FC dropped down to fourth place after playing out to a 1-1 draw against Black Leopards at Thohoyandou Stadium, a result that also saw promotion-chasing Lidoda Duvha remain in fifth place.

The two KZN sides will lock horns in a top-of-the-table affair on Sunday, 14 December as the second-tier title race heats up. JDR Stars swiftly moved into the second spot after a slender 1-0 win over Hungry Lions at Soshanguve Giant Stadium.

In the middle of the pack, newly promoted outfit Kruger United extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 3-1 away win to Upington City and climbed three places up to seventh, while City dropped down to 11th with a seven-match winless run.

Meanwhile, the University of Pretoria’s promotion aspirations took a setback after they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Casric Stars at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium, leaving them eight points adrift of the log leaders. On the other end, Venda FC remain rooted at the bottom of the table as they face an uphill battle in their bid to avoid the axe.

The Vhembe-based outfit was subjected to a 4-2 loss against Baroka FC at Global Stadium. Pretoria Callies’ late comeback was dented by Lethabo Modimoeng, who restored Orbit College’s lead in stoppage time for a 3-2 triumph at TUT Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Romans remain in 13th place with 13 points.

While they aim to put their relegation from the top-flight division behind them, Cape Town Spurs have failed to win a league match in their last nine attempts with their latest disappointing result coming in a 1-0 defeat to rookies Highbury FC.

The Urban Warriors are flirting with danger in 14th place, level on 10 points with 15th placed Leruma and one above Venda FC as they gear up for a relegation battle against Callies in their next outing on Friday, 13 December.
