Erasmus Clarifies Tony Brown Springbok Contract And All Blacks Move

Springbok director of rugby Rassie Erasmus has clarified assistant coach Tony Brown’s future, insisting there was never any discussion about releasing him from his contract before the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Brown, who joined the Springboks coaching setup in 2024, is contracted for four years and is expected to fulfil his agreement despite confirmation that he will return to New Zealand to join the All Blacks coaching team once his contract expires.

“No, but when we signed him, it was for four years, and we knew we were lucky to have him for four years,” Erasmus said, dismissing suggestions that Brown could leave prematurely.

“I don’t know why people would think that if we let him go, we would lose him for another two years. Why would we lose him for the final two years of his contract, with all his knowledge and what he brings to our team? He cares a helluva lot about this team.”

Erasmus emphasised that coaching turnover is a natural part of international rugby, pointing to previous departures within the Springbok setup before and after major tournaments.

“Obviously, he loves New Zealand, and that is his home country,” Erasmus said.

“We lost Swys de Bruin six months before the World Cup. Matt Proudfoot left us after the 2019 World Cup and went to England. Jacques Nienaber went to Ireland. Felix Jones went to England. People rotate, management teams change, and teams have different needs at different times.”

Despite Brown’s confirmed future move, Erasmus stressed that his contribution remains crucial to the Springboks’ ongoing development.

“What Tony is doing for us over the next 18 months is vital for the Springboks — we all know that — and he is with us,” Erasmus said. “We’re glad about that.”

Erasmus also highlighted the strong personal relationship he shares with Brown, noting their long history together as both player and coach.

“Remember, Tony played for me at the Stormers. I coached Tony at the Stormers. We coached against Tony in that Japan game where we had that long maul. We have come a long way, and Tony and I are great friends.”

“People will judge Tony for his decision, but we are so happy for him. He is going back home to coach the All Blacks. He was an All Black himself. You cannot be upset with him.”

“We are glad we’ve already had him for two years, and that is only the halfway point of his contract. With this year’s Tests and next year’s campaign, he will complete his contract.”

“We still want to learn so much from him over the final two years, but overall, we are very happy for him.”

Erasmus added that succession planning is already underway within the Springbok coaching structure ahead of Brown’s eventual departure.

“We already have people in mind whom we would like to bring in once Tony has completed his contract,” he said.
