Erasmus Lands New Club

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars have announced the signing of former Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Cape Town City, and SuperSport United talisman Kermit Erasmus on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old experienced forward became a free agent after parting ways with the Soweto giants at the end of last season, alongside Richard Ofori, Fortune Makaringe, Thabang Monare, and Souaibou Marou, among others.

Romeo, as the player is affectionately known, was linked to a host of Betway Premiership clubs after his exit from Pirates but nothing materialized and he spent six months in the wilderness as a result, searching for a new home.

Erasmus trained with second-tier outfit Cape Town Spurs for a week in October to secure a contract with the Urban Warriors, but the club opted against signing him. Ernst Middendorp confirmed that they didn’t sanction a deal as they felt the star belonged in the top flight.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach expressed concern that the Gqeberha-born striker might jump ship to a Betway Premiership side once his fitness is in order. This after Thato Mokeke moved on from the Cape Club once he regained full sharpness.

Furthermore, he was recently linked with a move to his hometown club Chippa United as he was spotted training with the Chilli Boys as well. Like other deals, including a possible return to the Citizens, the transfer hit a snag after the two parties couldn’t agree on terms.

Eventually, it’s the sixth-placed promotion-chasing team that won the race to sign the versatile player. The Mpumalanga-based outfit is seven points behind log leaders Durban City and they will be hoping this major coup can aid their promotion aspirations.

The former Bafana international has won three league titles, three MTN8 trophies, and the Nedbank Cup five times during his illustrious career in the top flight. It remains to be seen how he will fare at his new club.
