Sundowns Overcome Early Setback To Beat Magesi And Extend League Lead

Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their position atop the Betway Premiership with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Magesi FC at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

Wonderboy Makhubu gave Magesi an early lead, and the home side held onto their advantage until halftime.

However, Sundowns rallied in the second half. Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored a spectacular goal, volleying home after a knockdown from Arthur Sales.

Peter Shalulile appeared to have doubled Sundowns’ lead with a header, but the goal was incorrectly ruled offside.

Despite this setback, Sundowns ultimately secured the victory. Tashreeq Matthews’ attempted cross deflected off a Magesi defender, wrong-fooling goalkeeper Elvisi Chipezeze and finding the back of the net four minutes from time.

The match concluded with both teams reduced to ten men. Samuel Darpoh and Divine Lunga were both sent off in the dying moments of the game following a skirmish.

This victory provided some sweet revenge for Sundowns, who suffered a painful defeat to Magesi in the Carling Knockout final last November. That loss and coupled with other bad results ultimately led to the departure of Magesi coach Clinton Larsen, who has been replaced by Owen da Gama. Da Gama is yet to register a win since taking over.

Sundowns now extend their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership to 33 points after 12 matches, six points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand.

Pirates’ match against Royal AM was postponed on Thursday due to the KwaZulu-Natal club’s ongoing financial difficulties.

Magesi remain rooted at the bottom of the table with seven points from 13 matches. Despite the loss, they displayed a commendable fighting spirit against Sundowns and will undoubtedly draw encouragement from their performance in the upcoming matches.
