Erasmus Reveals Timelines For Etzebeth, Marx, And Snyman

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has moved to allay concerns over South Africa’s injury situation, insisting the world champions remain in a strong position despite a lengthy casualty list ahead of the international season.

While confirming that only a handful of players are expected to miss the entire campaign, Erasmus revealed that several key figures, including Eben Etzebeth, Grant Williams and Malcolm Marx, are on track to return during the course of the year.

The Springbok coach acknowledged that lock RG Snyman and utility forward Kwagga Smith remain the most significant long-term concerns, with both players unlikely to feature again until next year.

“RG Snyman and Kwagga (Smith) are probably the only long-term injuries, and they will only be available next year,” Erasmus said.

“These are guys who are the best possible fit, players who are accustomed to our system and would consistently make the match-day 23.”

Despite the extensive injury list, Erasmus stressed that the situation is far from a crisis and that the squad’s depth allows the coaching staff to remain patient with returning players.

“We can mention a lot of players, but that is not the situation,” he said.

“The reality of our camp is that we have a lot of players, and we’re not yet sure how we’re going to give all of them game time.

“I don’t want people to look at the injury list and think we’re in trouble, because that’s not the case.”

Erasmus then provided a detailed breakdown of the injured players and their projected return dates.

Among those facing lengthy spells on the sidelines are Kai Pratt and Marnus van der Merwe, while veteran props Frans Malherbe and Trevor Nyakane have yet to return to full fitness.

“Kai Pratt and Marnus van der Merwe are long-term injuries. Frans Malherbe and Trevor Nyakane have not come back yet. We hope they can,” Erasmus said.

The Springboks have also been dealt a blow with the loss of rising star Ruan Venter, who had been earmarked for a bigger role this season.

“We thought Ruan Venter could do it for us this year, and he is also suffering from a long-term injury.”

Veteran forward Deon Fourie is another player unavailable for selection, although Erasmus suggested his absence would have less of an impact on the team’s immediate plans.

“Deon Fourie is a guy we have always banked on. Unfortunately, he is also out, but Deon didn’t make the match-day 23 in most of the games. He would be there if we rotated or if we were really in trouble.”

Loose forward Jean-Luc du Preez and No. 8 Juarno Augustus are also sidelined, while scrumhalf Morne van den Berg — affectionately known as “Krappies” — is expected to return during the latter stages of the incoming series.

“Krappies is out but should be available for the New Zealand series and possibly even as early as the Scotland or Wales games.”

There was more encouraging news regarding the Hendrikse brothers, with Erasmus confirming that both Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse are expected to return before the end of the year.

“Jordan and Jaden are long-term injuries, but they will be back in the mix sometime this year.”

Exciting playmaker Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is also progressing well in his recovery and could return shortly before the Rugby Championship clashes against New Zealand.

“Sacha will be ready about four weeks before the New Zealand matches. Ethan Hooker and Henco (van Wyk) as well.”

Erasmus also confirmed that several senior stars are nearing a return.

“Grant (Williams) is ready, Malcolm Marx will be ready, and Eben will be ready for England.”

Veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach remains on track for a return later in the season, although the coaching staff is determined not to rush his recovery.

“Cobus Reinach could be ready for England, although that would be pushing it. We’d rather make sure he is fully ready. He will probably only join the squad after the incoming series.”

The positive injury outlook has also created a welcome selection headache for Erasmus, who admitted that the challenge may soon be finding opportunities for all the available players rather than simply covering for absentees.

With some experienced campaigners having completed demanding club seasons, the Springbok management is also considering resting several key figures during the early fixtures against the Barbarians and Zimbabwe.

“Some guys who have played a lot of rugby will be rested against the Barbarians. Players like Damian de Allende and Damian Willemse have played a lot of rugby, but we are still making decisions on that.”

It will be interesting to see how Erasmus navigates the international season. The growing availability of players and the depth being developed throughout South African rugby suggest the Springboks remain well positioned to handle another demanding campaign despite the inevitable injury setbacks that come with the modern game.
