Esperance & Ahly Drew Blank In The First Leg Of Champions League Final

ES Esperance and Al Ahly played to an intense 0-0 draw in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi in Radès on Saturday night.

This rematch of the 2018 final, which Esperance won on aggregate, was a tight affair with few scoring opportunities, unsurprising for a North African encounter.

The second leg will be held next weekend at Cairo International Stadium, where Al Ahly traditionally thrives. The Egyptian giants are heavy favorites due to their strong home form, demonstrated by their comeback win over TP Mazembe in the semi-final second leg.

Ahly boasts a rich history in this competition, having lifted the trophy a record 11 times. This is their fourth consecutive final appearance. Last season, they edged Esperance 1-0 in the Champions League semi-finals at Cairo International Stadium, with Hussein El Shahat scoring the only goal in the 22nd minute.

Ahly holds the upper hand in recent meetings, winning four straight encounters against Esperance since June 2021, outscoring them 8-0 during this dominant run.

Both finalists have secured a place at the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in the US next year by virtue of reaching the Champions League final. Esperance overcame pre-tournament favorites Mamelodi Sundowns, who failed to score in either leg of their semi-final clash.
