Ex-Chiefs Star Bags Brace In Burundi Win

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana scored a brace as Burundi thrashed Seychelles 5-0 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash at the neutral venue of Stade d’Honneur in Morocco on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old netted twice in six minutes to give his side a healthy 3-0 lead at the break.

Bimenyimana, who made his international debut in March 2017, has 22 Burundi caps under his belt with five goals scored in the process.

With the dominant win, the East African nation kept its World Cup qualification hopes alive, as the triumph kept them within touching distance of the best teams in the group such as leaders Ivory Coast and second-placed Gabon.

Burundi has accumulated 10 points after six matches played in Group F, trailing the table-toppers with six points and five points behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Gabon.

Moreover, The Swallows are four points above Benni McCarthy’s Kenya, who is in fourth place.

Meanwhile, the double will provide the nomadic center-forward with a platform to build on when he returns to his club, USM Alger. Bimenyimana joined the 2022/23 CAF Confederations Cup winners on a free transfer in February 2025 and scored on his debut – his only goal for the club so far.

Now, the ex-Chiefs cult hero will be keen to add to his goal tally when the Algerian giants visit second tier outfit CR Temouchent in the Algerian Cup quarterfinals on Thursday, 27 March, to progress to the semifinals of the competitions.

After their domestic commitments, USM will switch their focus to continental duty in the CAF Confederations Cup, where they will lock horns with CS Constantine in an all-Algerian quarterfinals clash on Wednesday, 2 April.
