Fadlu’s Simba Close In On League Leaders
Fadlu Davids’ Simba SC have narrowed the gap to two points behind NBC Tanzanian Premier League table-toppers Azam FC, following a convincing 2-0 win over bottom-placed KenGold at KMC Complex Stadium on Wednesday.
Center-forward Ateba Mbida, who joined the club in the off-season from Algerian side USM Alger, broke the deadlock in the 35th minute before completing his brace 10 minutes later, which proved enough to secure the maximum points.
The victory ensured that Davids’ men continue with their title charge as they have now won six successive matches in the league since suffering a slender 1-0 defeat to fierce rivals Young Africans back in October.
During that period, Simba have impressively scored 12 goals while conceding none to strengthen their title credentials, with the club last crowned champions of Tanzania in the 2020/21 season before they were toppled.
Since then, the 22-time Tanzanian top-flight winners have witnessed Yanga win four consecutive league titles, finishing as runners-up for three seasons in a row before they finished in third place last season to secure a CAF Confederations cup spot.
Davids’ charges moved up to second place on the log standings with 31 points accumulated after 12 matches played. Furthermore, The Reds of Msimbazi have three games in hand over the leaders due to their continental commitments.
Up next for Simba is a trip to Kagera Sugar at Kaitaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon as they aim to add to the 24 goals they scored in the league throughout the season and keep the number of conceded goals to three, with 10 clean sheets thus far.
