FIFA blast Clubs & League Bodies For Overstretching Players

FIFA has lambasted leagues and clubs worldwide for overworking players during pre-season tours, accusing some European leagues of hypocrisy.

The governing body claims clubs are stretching players to the limit with demanding international travel schedules for commercial gain.

Many European clubs are currently undertaking pre-season tours in Asia or the United States, just days after the conclusion of the European Championship in Germany. FIFA argues this is excessive given the demanding fixture list players have already endured.

Three South African clubs – Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, and Mamelodi Sundowns – have also embarked on pre-season tours in Europe. Sundowns players, in particular, have played close to 60 matches this season, including six domestic competitions and seven matches for the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations.

FIFA has expressed deep concern about player welfare, stating: “The current calendar was unanimously approved by the FIFA Council, following comprehensive consultations with FIFPRO and league bodies. FIFA’s calendar is essential for the survival and prosperity of international football alongside domestic and continental club football. Some European leagues are prioritizing commercial interests over the wellbeing of players. FIFA must protect the interests of football worldwide, including player protection.”

CAF Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba supported FIFA’s stance, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and opportunity in football. However, FIFA itself has been criticized for disrupting the football calendar with the expanded Club World Cup, scheduled for the United States in June 2024. This has forced the Africa Cup of Nations to be rescheduled to December 2025 – January 2026.
