FKF Breaks Silence On Match-Fixing Allegations Surrounding Goalkeeper

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has responded to claims of an alleged match-fixing scandal surrounding the Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi after a leaked video showed the player seemingly negotiating a deal to sway the outcome of a match.

In the secretly recorded video, the Veteran shot-stopper sitting in the back of a stationary vehicle is seen engaged in a serious conversation with another individual off-camera sitting in the front seat. However, it remains unclear when the video was recorded.

Despite accumulating a vast amount of experience playing for some of the big teams in the Kenyan Premier League, including AFC Leopards, Tusker FC, and Posta Rangers, the 37-year-old is prone to blunders – often raising eyebrows for a goalkeeper of his caliber.

Matasi, who turns out for Kakamega Homeboyz after recently parting ways with Kenya Police, made two errors in Kenya’s 4-1 thumping to Cameroon in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers last year in October and was subsequently dropped to the bench in the following match. Now, FKF has launched an investigation.

“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is aware of videos circulating online involving goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, raising concerns about possible match manipulation,” the statement from Kenya’s football governing body read.

“FKF upholds the integrity of football and has launched an official investigation in collaboration with FIFA, CAF, and other relevant authorities. We reaffirm our zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation and are committed to safeguarding the credibility of our competitions.

“The investigation will adhere to FKF’s Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations and FIFA guidelines, ensuring a fair, transparent, and thorough process. The rights of the player and of his club will be respected, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

“We encourage anyone with credible information to assist in this investigation. All reports will be handled with strict confidentiality. Information can be submitted via integrity@footballkenya.org. FKF will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.

Following a series of schoolboy errors, Matasi appears to have lost his place in the Kenya national team. Newly appointed Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy snubbed the experienced goalkeeper when he named his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

It was Richards Bay’s goal-minder, Ian Otieno, who got the nod to start in goal as the East African nation played out to a 3-3 draw with Gambia in the South African mentor’s first match in charge of the team, before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Gabon on Sunday.
