Germany Cruises Past Hungary To Secure Early Knockout Spot
Germany showcased another dominant performance, defeating Hungary 2-0 in their second European Championship match and becoming the first nation to secure a spot in the round of 16.
The match began with a scare for Germany. Hungary’s early press forced a mistake from defender Jonathan Tah, who lost possession in his own box. However, Manuel Neuer came to the rescue with a crucial sliding clearance.
Germany capitalized on a defensive error in the 21st minute to take the lead. Hungarian defender Willi Orban stumbled while controlling the ball, allowing it to fall kindly to 21-year-old German sensation Jamal Musiala. Musiala wasted no time, smashing the ball into the net.
In the 28th minute, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai tested Neuer with a well-placed free kick, but the German goalkeeper rose to the occasion, parrying the shot away.
The first half ended with Germany dominating possession (66%) but both teams having made only three saves each.
In the second half, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann aimed to bolster his attack with two substitutions. Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz made way for Leroy Sané and Niclas Füllkrug.
The Germans finally added a second goal in the 67th minute through Ilkay Gündogan. The unmarked Barcelona midfielder swept home a cross from Maximilian Mittelstadt at the far post.
Frustration mounted for Hungary as the game progressed. They saw less and less of the ball and their counter-attacks became increasingly error-prone.
With the final whistle blowing at 2-0, Hungary’s Euro campaign took a significant blow. This marks their first two-game losing start since 1976, effectively ending their hopes of reaching the last 16. Meanwhile, Germany’s victory strengthens their position as favorites.
The host nation appears to be improving with each game, with Musiala playing a starring role. Additionally, Toni Kroos’ return to the national team has brought stability to the midfield with his incisive passing and calming presence. However, Kroos, despite at the age of 34, will be retiring from football at the end of this tournament.
