Mammila Uncertain About Future At Baroka
Coach Morgan Mammila is unsure about his future with Baroka FC in the upcoming Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Mammila’s team was heavily defeated 4-0 by Richards Bay in their final match of the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday. Baroka needed a 3-0 victory to secure promotion, while a draw was sufficient for Richards Bay to retain their top-flight status.
Mammila was appointed earlier this month after the club suspended coach Dan Malesela following a 1-0 loss to University of Pretoria in the first playoff game.
The former Baroka CEO was brought in with the hope of winning the playoffs. The team showed promise by earning two draws against AmaTuks and Richards Bay respectively, raising hopes of promotion heading into the final match. However, Richards Bay had other plans.
“I still need to meet with the chairman to discuss the way forward,” Mammila told SuperSport TV.
Mammila was unable to address the media after the game due to the focus on Richards Bay’s activities, as they were plenty of celebrating, including the departure of Sanele Barns, who is joining Stellenbosch FC. When those activities were done, Baroka was gone.
“But I can see this team needs a lot to be rebuilt, so we’ll meet and see what the future holds for the team,” added Mammila.
Despite the heavy defeat, Baroka had some bright spots in their performance, particularly Kabelo Kgositsile and Sekela Sithole, who were actively trying to create opportunities.
Mammila acknowledged their efforts but demanded improvement. “The result speaks for itself; they were there, but they still need to improve,” he said.
“However, this is the future. If you have eight Under-23 players starting and playing like this, what more can you ask for?
“It’s just a matter of waiting. We come back in August, and I believe we’ll be better, much better than we are now.”
