González’s Late penalty Sees City Edge Sekhukhune

Cape Town City secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the MTN8 quarter-finals on Sunday, thanks to a late penalty from Darwin González.
The Venezuelan striker had earlier missed a spot-kick in the first half, striking the crossbar.
The match was a largely uneventful affair, with few clear-cut chances created. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm, likely due to it being their first game of the season. Keletso Makgalwa had the best opportunity for Sekhukhune in the first half, but his shot went wide.
City’s best chance of the opening period came when Jody Lee Ah Shene was fouled in the penalty area. However, González’s subsequent penalty attempt was saved by the crossbar.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with little to excite the crowd. Linda Mntambo nearly gave Sekhukhune the lead with a header, but his effort went just wide.
The match was ultimately decided by a second penalty awarded to City. Siphesihle Mkhize was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, and González made no mistake from the spot, securing his team’s place in the semi-finals.
City will be joined by either Mamelodi Sundowns or Polokwane City in the semi-finals, as they are playing at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday. Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch have already qualified for the final four.
