Human Wants To Punish Former Coach Hunt
When AmaZulu hosts SuperSport United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in their Betway Premiership match on Saturday (20:00), attacker Rowan Human is looking to make a point, in a positive way.
Human wants to show SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt why he gave him his professional debut at Bidvest Wits four years ago.
The 24-year-old made his PSL debut under Hunt at Wits against Stellenbosch in January 2020 at the age of 18, 11 months and 14 days old. It was a memorable occasion, as Wits won 2-0 with goals from Gift Motupa and Deon Hotto.
Interestingly, Human’s first PSL goal came against his current club, AmaZulu, in August 2020, in a 2-1 victory for Wits. That was his only goal in 15 appearances under Hunt before he moved abroad.
“He was definitely big in my contribution by promoting me,” said Human.
“He handed me my first game. I will always have that respect for him and to play against him, it is always something good.
“But I want to show him why he promoted me.”
Human, who joined Usuthu from Maritzburg United at the start of last season, struggled to find his footing. He made only 11 appearances and neither scored nor assisted any goals.
However, this season has been different. Human has shown a spark, featuring in 16 matches across all competitions so far, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
He explained why it took him so long to find his form.
“I think it’s just about confidence and self-belief, wanting to prove yourself, and that’s what was important,” he said. “Having said that, I still have a lot to do. You can see by the numbers – one goal. So, there is definitely room for improvement. As long as I’m playing, I’m happy about that. But there has definitely been improvement this season.”
Usuthu heads into this game after a 5-0 drubbing by Stellenbosch in their previous league match. However, they regained some confidence with a 5-1 win over amateur side Mighty Eagles in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 midweek. Both coaches, Vusi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane, rested key players for that Nedbank Cup game, with Human given only 45 minutes.
