Johnson Eyes Top-8 Finish After Sundowns Thrashing
Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has acknowledged the team’s lack of remaining objectives but emphasized the importance of securing a top-eight finish in the DStv Premiership.
These comments come after a demoralizing 5-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Thursday. The victory secured Sundowns’ seventh consecutive league title, their 14th in the PSL era, and 17th overall.
Sundowns dominated the second half, scoring all five goals against a Chiefs side left shorthanded by Given Msimango’s red card in the 19th minute for a foul on Lucas Ribeiro Costa. Despite the disadvantage, Chiefs managed to hold their ground defensively in the first half and prevented any goals.
This defeat marked the first time in PSL history that Chiefs conceded five goals in a single match.
“You have to play for that (top eight),” said Johnson after the game on SuperSport TV.
“Chiefs have to play for that, they know that they have to play for that, we have to get there. It is one of the things that we have to maintain in order to start the following season on a high note. We have to get there.”
Currently in eighth place with 33 points after 26 matches, Chiefs face TS Galaxy, AmaZulu, Polokwane City, and Cape Town Spurs in their remaining fixtures.
