Emotional Mokwena Dedicates Title to Sundowns Chairman

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, visibly emotional after the match as they crushed Kaizer Chiefs on Thursday, dedicated the 2023/24 league title to club chairman Thlope Motsepe.

Mokwena spoke about a challenging personal period in the past few weeks. He praised Motsepe for his unwavering encouragement and belief in him during these difficult times.

The victory secured Sundowns’ seventh consecutive league title, their 14th in the PSL era, and their 17th overall by thrashing Chiefs 5-1 at FNB Stadium.

This win comes amidst an ongoing controversy. TS Galaxy threatened legal action if Mokwena didn’t apologize for comments regarding their coach, Sead Ramovic. As of now, there’s no official confirmation of an apology from Sundowns.

“I want to dedicate this victory and maybe even the victory is not strong enough, maybe the entire season, to the chairman of this football club, Thlope Motsepe,” said Mokwena on SuperSport TV after the game.

“I get emotional. In the good moments, he is there. In the bad moments, he is there. The last three weeks I felt very low, but he has been texting me every single day.

“I just want to dedicate this league title against a big rival to our chairman Thlope Motsepe because he has been unbelievable human being. He has been an incredible leader; he has been so supportive. I hope he’s watching, and this is for you.”

Sundowns’ league triumph came despite their exit from the CAF Champions League semifinals against ES Esperance over the weekend.

Tashreeq Matthews (Man of the Match) scored twice alongside goals from Matias Esquivel, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, and Thembinkosi Lorch. Mdu Shabalala scored a consolation penalty for Kaizer Chiefs in their 5-1 defeat.
