Mokwena Targets Invincible And Record Points Tally

Having secured the DStv Premiership title after their emphatic win over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Thursday night, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena set his sights on reaching new heights.

No team in the PSL era has achieved the feat of winning the league and remaining unbeaten throughout the season, but Sundowns are looking to become the first.

They clinched their seventh consecutive title with a dominant 5-1 victory against Chiefs at “The Calabash,” scoring all five goals in the second half.

Currently on 62 points after 24 matches without a league defeat, Sundowns can reach a total of 80 points if they win their remaining six games.

However, achieving such a high point tally is unprecedented in the 16-team PSL format introduced in the 2001/02 season. The highest points total in this format belongs to Sundowns themselves, with 71 points in the 2015/16 season, a campaign where Mokwena served as assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane.

Sundowns fell just short of replicating that achievement last season, finishing with 70 points.

“My plan, but ultimately, God decide,” Mokwena acknowledged.

“Football is about winning, losing, and drawing, and that’s the mindset we enter each game with. I’m pleased to see a shift in our approach, where the fear of losing.

“There was a period where our focus was solely on avoiding defeat. We’ve had to remind the players that our success stemmed from an attacking mentality. I’m happy to see that shift back in the last four or five games.

“The mentality has shifted back towards winning, and why not go for the 71-point record? If we get it, fantastic. If not, we’ll learn and try again next time. Every challenge is an opportunity. Successful people, as I always say, are constantly seeking new peaks to conquer.

“So, why not aim for 71 points and even surpass that mark? After all, we reached 70 points last season. It’s possible, so why not?”

Having already secured the domestic double with their African Football League victory in November, Sundowns can add another trophy to their cabinet this coming weekend. They face a tricky encounter against Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup final at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday.
