Jordaan Hints On Potential Bid To Host World Cup
South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan has addressed coaching qualification regulation talks while hinting at major tournament hosting desires.
SAFA Ekhuruleni region has successfully hosted its first-ever CAF B coaching license course, which saw a total of 25 coaches in attendance.
Addressing the press at the graduation ceremony in Friday, the SAFA president spoke on the growing demand for coaching qualifications with the federation having also announced another course to be hosted in KwaZulu Natal in October.
“I spoke to the technical director to say we must match the implementation and the demand for qualification with our program of coach education,” expressed Jordaan.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) postponed their new coaching qualification regulations set to begin in the 2024/25 season.
This came after great protestation from several South African coaches who believed SAFA had not been hosting enough courses for them to enroll and further their qualifications.
With the federation now hosting CAF licenses at a more frequent rate, the president suggested an imminent likelihood of coaching regulations to be implemented in South African football leagues.
“I think we are moving at a position where we will be in a position to demand coach education and particularly at the highest level of our leagues that they must produce the proper qualifications, aligned with what CAF demands,” suggested Jordaan.
The SAFA president provided a summary of the outcome of his recent meeting with the newly elected minister of Sports Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie.
Amongst multiple issues discussed, Jordaan hinted at a particularly substantial discussion that spoke on South Africa’s interests to potentially bid to host the 2031 World Cup.
South Africa was keen to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup but pulled out after not getting enough support from government. Some said SAFA should focus on professionalizing its women’s league since it is semi-professional before jumping in hosting the tournament.
“We have already expressed the view that we want to host the World Cup in 2031 after Brazil. We must bring the proposal and he (Mckenzie) will support it,” hinted Jordaan.
