Kaizer Chiefs Fined Again R200ks For Fans Misconduct

Kaizer Chiefs have been charged once again by the PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) with a R200,000 fine after fans threw missiles during their Carling Knockout quarter-final match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs were heavily defeated 4-0 by Sundowns earlier this month in the League Cup at FNB Stadium.

Frustrated fans expressed their disappointment by throwing missiles onto the pitch, as Chiefs’ hopes of winning a trophy were dashed.

The situation was further exacerbated by the red card shown to defender and captain Inácio Miguel for a foul on Peter Shalulile.

PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu expressed concern about the recurring incidents of fan misconduct, stating that it negatively impacts the league’s image. He urged clubs to take proactive measures to prevent such behavior.

“I can confirm that earlier today (Friday), Kaizer Chiefs Football Club appeared before the PSL DC to answer charges of spectator misbehavior due to missile-throwing incidents during their match against Mamelodi Sundowns.”

The respondent, Kaizer Chiefs, pleaded guilty as charged. After considering the submissions regarding the appropriate sanction, the PSL ruled as follows:

  1. Kaizer Chiefs is fined R200,000, with half of the fine suspended for 12 months, on the condition that they do not reoffend during this period.
  2. As Kaizer Chiefs had previously been fined R100,000 (with R50,000 suspended) for similar offenses, the suspended portion of the previous fine will now be activated. This, combined with half of the current R200,000 fine, results in a total fine of R150,000.
  3. Additionally, Kaizer Chiefs will be required to pay the administrative costs of the hearing.

The DC acknowledged that repeated fines may not be the most effective solution to address the growing issue of hooliganism. However, under the current rules, clubs are held vicariously liable for the actions of their fans.

The DC emphasized the need for innovative solutions to curb this behavior. Until such solutions are implemented, the league will continue to enforce the existing rules and impose penalties.

It’s worth noting that Kaizer Chiefs have now appeared before the PSL DC four times in the previous season and twice this season for similar offenses. This pattern of misconduct is not exclusive to Chiefs, as Orlando Pirates were recently charged with a similar offense.

The DC stressed the importance of maintaining a positive and enjoyable atmosphere at football matches. Fans who engage in violent or disruptive behavior undermine the game and harm the reputation of their clubs.
