Kolbe Returns Home As Stormers Secure Bok Superstar

Global rugby superstar Cheslin Kolbe will make a sensational return to Cape Town next season after signing a deal to rejoin the DHL Stormers, as Stormers Rugby continues building towards an exciting future through Project 2029.

One of the most electrifying players in world rugby, Kolbe’s return marks a major statement of intent from the Stormers. It brings one of Cape Town’s favourite sons back to where his professional journey began, adding world-class quality, championship experience and undeniable X-factor to the squad.

The speedster grew up in Cape Town and rose through the Stormers Rugby system, earning 49 caps for the DHL Stormers before continuing his career in France and Japan, where he established himself as one of the game’s elite players.

Renowned for his explosive pace and dazzling footwork, Kolbe represented the Junior Springboks in 2013 before becoming an international Sevens star and winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

He made his Springbok debut in 2018 and scored a memorable try in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final in Japan, cementing his place among the modern greats. Kolbe has since become a two-time Rugby World Cup winner and one of South African rugby’s most inspirational figures.

A product of Brackenfell High School, Kolbe has defied expectations throughout his career. Once overlooked because of his size, he has become a symbol of courage, belief and world-class skill.

Director of Rugby John Dobson described Kolbe’s return as a massive coup for Stormers Rugby.

“Cheslin is a son of this community and has remained a passionate DHL Stormers supporter throughout his life. He gives our fans hope and inspiration, so having him back in our colours is huge.

“As a player, he can do things on the field that nobody else can. Beyond that, his attitude and work ethic are second to none, and his presence in the squad will undoubtedly lift everyone around him,” he said.

Dobson added that Kolbe’s arrival represents another important milestone in Project 2029.

“Cheslin will play an invaluable role for us both on and off the field as we continue to develop our squad. He will only be 34 in 2029 and, beyond the obvious attacking threat he brings, he will also provide the ideal example for our young talent in terms of discipline, conditioning, versatility and work ethic.

“We have had several top South African players express interest in joining us, but with Siya Kolisi and Cheslin, we now have two iconic DHL Stormers returning who will play an influential role in the careers of emerging talent through their experience, professionalism and passion for the club.

“We saw Cheslin produce incredible moments in a DHL Stormers jersey early in his career, and we know there will be many more magical memories for our fans to celebrate. We cannot wait to welcome him home,” he added.

Kolbe said it had always been his dream to return to where it all began.

“Cape Town and this team have played such a significant role in my life and career. When I left, it was always with the hope that one day I would come home and represent this team again. To have that opportunity now means so much to my family and me.

“This is a special moment for us. I have strong connections with the players and coaches here, and I am excited about what we can achieve together.

“The DHL Stormers are part of who I am, and I am grateful to be returning at such an exciting time for the club.

“Project 2029 is a bold vision and something I truly believe in. There is immense talent here, a strong culture and a clear plan for what this team can become.

“I want to contribute wherever I can, both on and off the field, and help create more special moments for the people of Cape Town,” he said.
