Komphela Reveals The Importance Of Having Shalulile Scoring

Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach Steve Komphela has expressed his excitement to see striker Peter Shalulile scoring goals after plundering two on Wednesday.

The Namibian talisman has been struggling to score goals in Sundowns and also in the national team of Namibia as he last scored in May this year. The former Highlands Park striker finally scored a goal against Lamontville Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout 16 recently.

Shalulile has three goals now in all competitions for Sundowns as he scored a brace against Cape Town City on Wednesday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Komphela revealed on Thursday that Shalulile is a great striker and they are happy to have him because he helps them a lot. “Historically, Peter had been a great and a core member of Mamelodi Sundowns, and all of had depth, not only in mind but even in terms of statistics,” Komphela said. “Now when you saw him score last night, you’ve felt a sense of relief. And also for him is very important to score goals, [and] as a striker to be high in confidence. The only thing that brings confidence to a striker is numbers in the net, and when they score they get confidence.

“The fact that he scored two [goals on Wednesday] was more of a confirmation of quality he is that it was not an accident. And also the type of goals he scored, the first goal beautiful goal – just from outside the box, a good strike strikes and he does that at training. The second goal as well [was also a beautiful goal].”

Komphela also revealed that they are happy about Shalulile and Rayners’ combination.

“It was also great to see Peter getting a ball from Iqraam [Rayners] because the ball was played through from Neo [Maema] then he controlled as he controls,” he said.

“Peter was on top, so when you find two strikers interplaying, one provides and the other one takes it. The other one makes and the other one takes, it feels good. It was very important for the club, for our supporters, and even Peter for.

“It was a great pleasure to see him scoring again and the celebration trademark, you could feel a man is jumping out of a shell and say ‘goodness finally [I scored],’ and we were all happy about him.”

Shalulile and Sundowns will visit Kaizer Chiefs this weekend in the Last 16 of the Carling Knockout at FNB Stadium on Saturday. The last time these two sides faced each other at FNB Stadium, Sundowns won 2-1 in a Betway Premiership this month.

The captain of the Namibian national team Shalulile will be hoping to score his fourth goal of the season against Amakhosi, having scored a brace against them last season in the second leg of the MTN8 semi final.
