Kopo: Riveiro Used Abusive Language Me

Chippa United co-coach Kwanele Kopo accused Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro of using abusive language during their 3-1 Nedbank Cup semi-final defeat at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

“I have a lot of respect for Orlando Pirates as a club,” Kopo fumed on SuperSport TV. “However, the language used by their coach today was absolutely shocking and has no place in football.”

Kopo went on to express his disappointment that Riveiro wouldn’t make eye contact or shake hands after the match. He also accused Riveiro of inciting Chippa United defender Bievenu Eva Nga, who received a red card during the game.

“I understand Pirates’ desire to defend their title,” Kopo said. “But I believe people in positions of authority should conduct themselves with more decorum.”

Despite the loss, Kopo praised Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi for his professionalism.

“Coach Mandla deserves credit,” Kopo said. “While others were resorting to abuse, he was the only one who came over to apologize. It’s disappointing that even the fourth official seemed to ignore the abusive language.”

Kopo suggested the incident was racially charged, highlighting the use of a “second language” towards him and his staff.

“We all experience pressure as coaches,” Kopo explained. “But we know better than to stoop to using certain language. It’s disrespectful, especially considering some of us grew up during difficult times in South Africa.”

Kopo concluded by expressing his frustration with what he perceives as a double standard in South African football.

“It angers me that abusive behavior seems acceptable when directed at people of a certain background,” Kopo said. “We need to overcome this in South African football.”

The Nedbank Cup final will take place on 1 June at Mbombela Stadium.
