Larsen Emerges As Top Contender For AmaZulu Coaching Position
Clinton Larsen is a strong contender for the AmaZulu coaching position after the club’s failed attempts to secure Benni McCarthy and Ernst Middendorp.
While Usuthu was reportedly close to appointing Larsen, internal discussions led to some reservations within the club’s management. However, they have renewed their interest in him, despite his current commitment to Magesi FC, whom he led to promotion last season.
AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu announced that a new local coach would be appointed this week, aligning with the club’s preference for someone familiar with South African football culture.
Acquiring Larsen might involve buying out his contract with Magesi or negotiating his resignation. If appointed, Larsen would be coaching in his home province for the third time, having previously managed Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows.
His coaching career includes stints at Summerfield Dynamos, Bizana Pondo Chiefs, Polokwane City FC, Chippa United, Bloemfontein Celtic FC, and Roses United. He achieved significant success at Celtic, winning the Carling Knockout Cup in 2012/13 when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns before leading Magesi to promotion last season.
AmaZulu’s first match after the FIFA break will be in the Carling Knockout Cup before facing MTN8 champions Orlando Pirates on 25 October. Unlike Usuthu’s winless start, which led to the sacking of coach Pablo Franco Martin, Larsen’s Magesi has secured four points from their first four matches in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Losing Larsen would be a setback for Magesi, but it could be a significant step forward in Larsen’s coaching career, taking on the position at AmaZulu, one of the oldest clubs in the Betway Premiership.
