Lindelani Ladies Coach Explains Brawl with Royal AM

Lindelani Ladies coach Nathi Vilakazi shed light on the events that led to the brawl with Royal AM during their Hollywoodbets Super League match on Sunday.

A video on X space has gone viral where both teams were involved in an ugly brawl at Princess Magogo Stadium, where five red cards were dished out.

“From my understanding, there was a goal scored by Royal AM and one of the players was taking the ball from the net to the center circle,” Vilakazi told Sportswire.

“So, the other was refusing to release the ball and the one was looking for the ball. Then the one who was refusing the ball and the other taking the ball clashed and that is what I heard.

“You know when you have scored the goal and the other team refuses you to take the ball to the center, but it is not something I’m sure with.”

Vilakazi anticipates sanctions for Lindelani due to the player’s involvement in initiating the incident. “SAFA [South African Football Association] released a statement indicating potential disciplinary action,” he said.

SAFA chairperson in KZN Kwenza Ngwenya was not available for comment as his phone was off, but as per the SAFA statement, the association said they were disappointed by the ugly scenes, and they will investigate the matter.

“What was meant to be an entertaining KZN derby in women’s football, turned out to put the integrity of the women’s game in disarray,” said SAFA in a statement.

“SAFA has received the Match Commissioner’s report following the incident caught live on SABC 1.

“The referee’s report will also be studied before the two teams are called into a disciplinary hearing. This after a fight broke out on the pitch and forced the referee to give five red cards in the dying minutes of the game.”

Shauwn Mkhize’s Royal AM ultimately secured a 2-1 victory. Currently, Royal AM sits 11th in the table with seven points from seven games, while Lindelani Ladies occupy the second-to-last position with four points from the same number of matches in a 16-team league.
