Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has pinpointed the importance of striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, calling him a crucial piece of the team’s current success. 

Mabasa, who returned from a loan spell at Moroka Swallows in the first half of the season, has been on fire for Pirates, netting four goals in the last two league matches. 

He was the difference-maker against AmaZulu at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, converting a Monnapule Saleng assist for his 11th league goal, tying Lucas Ribeiro Costa of Mamelodi Sundowns for the top scorer position. 

Mabasa’s goal secured the win and solidified his status as a key player for Orlando Pirates this season. With an impressive tally of 14 goals and three assists in 25 appearances across all competitions, he has been instrumental in the team’s achievements. 

When asked about Mabasa’s exceptional form, Riveiro shed light on the forward’s vital role within the team’s structure. 

Riveiro emphasized Mabasa’s significance, stating Riveiro emphasized Mabasa’s importance, stating, “He is one more piece in our structure, an important one right now.”  

The coach highlighted Mabasa’s contributions beyond scoring goals, acknowledging his defensive capabilities and his role as the team’s first defender when not in possession.   

Riveiro praised Mabasa’s commitment to the team’s tactical approach, stating, “He is contributing to the roles that we assigned to the number nine position and so far, he’s doing well.”  

Furthermore, Riveiro credited Mabasa’s success to the healthy competition within the squad, emphasizing the relentless effort put in by all players, even those not currently in the starting lineup.   

“The ones who are not playing recently, they are training very well, they are putting pressure, they want to be there as well, and they are working for it,” remarked Riveiro.  

In his concluding remarks, Riveiro reiterated the team’s collective effort, emphasizing the support and unity among the players. “In the end, only one can go to the field, but this is a team. Everybody’s working to make it possible. The ones who are going on the field have our support, and he is not an exception,” stated Riveiro.  

With Mabasa leading the attack and the entire squad performing exceptionally well, Pirates are poised to continue their impressive form and challenge for top honors in the upcoming fixtures.
