Maduka Vows To Avoid Playoffs, Cites Spurs’ Struggles

Royal AM coach John Maduka is adamant his team will avoid the precarious position of the PSL relegation/promotion playoffs.

He emphasizes the difficulties associated with these playoffs, citing Cape Town Spurs’ recent relegation as a prime example.

Maduka’s concerns stem from Royal AM’s recent slump. They’ve lost their last five league matches, failing to score in any of them. This string of defeats has dragged them into the relegation zone, sitting just two points above the playoff spot currently occupied by Richards Bay.

“We are positive that we won’t go to the playoffs,” declared Maduka. “It’s something we discussed with the players – we don’t want to be in that situation.”

He further elaborates on the detrimental impact of the playoffs, using Spurs’ relegation as a case study. “We saw Spurs get relegated. They weren’t a bad team,” said Maduka, referencing Royal AM’s recent loss to Spurs.

“But after the playoffs, there is a start of the season. So, it’s not easy. Again, it has been a long season with the same players who are not much used to playing weak in, week out.

“If you go to the playoffs, it’s going to be difficult for us (to remain in the topflight). Our thinking is – it is still in our hands with two games to play.”

Maduka remains optimistic, emphasizing that Royal AM’s fate is still in their own hands with two games remaining. These matches offer a crucial opportunity to secure their top-flight status.

“Our next two games are against teams more our size,” Maduka commented, referring to upcoming fixtures against Chippa United and Moroka Swallows. “They will be difficult, of course. Chippa is a must-win game; we can’t rely on others for favors. We have to do it ourselves.”
