Pirates Beat SuperSport To Go Top Of The Table

Orlando Pirates climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

Evidence Makgopa’s early goal set the tone for Pirates’ dominant performance. Despite controlling much of the game, Pirates struggled to convert their chances, with Relebohile Mofokeng missing several opportunities. However, Deon Hotto sealed the win with a late goal.

Pirates’ victory marked their fourth consecutive league win of the season, a feat not achieved since the 2002/03 season when they won the title. Mamelodi Sundowns, the previous league leaders, have the chance to reclaim the top spot with a win over Royal AM on Wednesday.

SuperSport came to this game having not defeated Pirates at Orlando Stadium in the league since January 2014. Pirates entered the match looking to bounce back from a defeat in the Carling Knockout round by Magesi FC. SuperSport too came to this game having been thumped 4-0 by Kaizer Chiefs in their cup match.

Makgopa capitalized on a defensive lapse from SuperSport to open the scoring in the second minute. Thalente Mbatha’s cross narrowly missed Nkosinathi Sibisi’s sliding attempt in the fifth minute as Pirates was looking for the second goal. The home side continued to create chances, but Mofokeng’s poor execution prevented them from extending their lead.

SuperSport briefly threatened to equalize in the 26th minute, but Vincent Pule’s goal was disallowed for offside. Pirates dominated the first half, suffocating SuperSport’s defense.

In the second half, Mohau Nkota’s shot went wide, where he was set up by Patrick Maswanganyi’s backheel inside the box, with the Soweto giants struggling to increase their lead despite continued pressure.

Coach Jose Riveiro substituted goal scorer Makgopa for Tshegofatso Mabasa late in the match. Innocent Maela’s pass set up Mofokeng for a clear chance, but his shot was blocked by Neo Rapoo in the goal line having left Goss on the floor. But Hotto’s late goal secured the 2-0 victory for Pirates.
