Matthews Confident Ahead Of Al Ahly Showdown

Mamelodi Sundowns winger Tashreeq Matthews is undaunted by the daunting task of facing Al Ahly in the second leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final at Cairo International Stadium on Friday [18:00].

With a packed Cairo iconic stadium expected to house almost 70,000 fans, Matthews acknowledges the home advantage Al Ahly will have, but remains confident in Sundowns’ abilities.

“I’ve never played in front of 70,000 people, but I’ve been in a stadium with more than 70,000 people,” Matthews said.

“It’s a nice crowd to have, but they’re going to have more advantage because it’s their home game.”

Despite this, Matthews is adamant that Sundowns will do what it takes to secure victory.

“We are going to do what we have to do to try and get victory,” he stated firmly.

Matthews also highlighted Al Ahly’s strengths, particularly their solid defense and high-energy pressing.

“I think their strengths are that they are defending very well. They also run a lot in terms of putting the legs to get that much movement to make sure they stay focused.”

The first leg ended in a goalless draw and Matthews was given a starter by coach Miguel Cardos in the aim to attack Ahly up top, but he could not affect the game.

The match promises to be an electrifying encounter, with both teams vying for a spot in the final of this competition. The winner of this tie will face the winner between Pyramids and Orlando Pirates, who will slug out in the second leg semi final at the 30 June Stadium three hours later.
