Matthews Rescues Sundowns’ Draw In European Tour Against Cardiff

Striker Tashreeq Matthews scored a late goal to rescue a 1-1 draw for Mamelodi Sundowns, salvaging them from the brink of defeat against Cardiff City at Waldstadion on Tuesday.
Sundowns, whose European tour has been underwhelming so far, should have emerged victorious. Bathusi Aubass narrowly missed a golden opportunity after a superb build-up by Themba Zwane. Despite dominating possession and showcasing impressive passing combinations, it was clear Sundowns appeared to be operating at a pre-season level.
Cardiff City, without former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey, matched Sundowns evenly in the first half. However, the Welsh side took the lead early in the second half when Joel Colwill finished expertly in the 47th minute. Sundowns responded strongly and eventually found an equaliser through Matthews in the 75th minute.
Still searching for their first win of the tour, Sundowns have suffered defeats against German third division side Sandhausen (2-1) and Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev (1-0). Their final match abroad will be against Al Arabi SC from Qatar on Friday, where they will aim to secure a victory before returning to South Africa.
