Sundowns Fall Short In European Tour Opener

Unlike Orlando Pirates’ impressive victory against Spanish side Sevilla, Mamelodi Sundowns failed to secure a win in their European tour opener on Tuesday.
Sundowns lost 2-1 to SV Sandhausen at Stadion Jenbach, a German third-division team. The game was a close call, with Sundowns facing significant pressure and goalkeeper Jody February making numerous saves in the second half.
This marked Sundowns’ first match since coach Rulani Mokwena’s departure and the beginning of their European tour this year. Mokwena recently joined Wydad Casablanca.
While their second goal by Sandhausen came from an own goal from Dominic Baumann, the South African giants made numerous substitutions throughout the match. These friendlies are intended to prepare the team for a long season ahead, which includes the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States next year.
Led by the coaching duo of Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi, Sundowns will aim for better results in their upcoming matches.
They face a strong Ukrainian side, Dynamo Kiev, on Wednesday, followed by Welsh team Cardiff City on 23 July. Their final two fixtures will be against Arabi SC and Al Hilal on 26 July.
