Komphela: I Always Had My Eyes On Sundowns Affairs

Coach Steve Komphela reveals he closely followed Mamelodi Sundowns’ development during his absence.
Komphela recently returned to Sundowns after a brief stint at Golden Arrows. This move came after the departure of Rulani Mokwena, who now manages Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach left Sundowns before the start of last season, joining Moroka Swallows. However, his time at the Dube Birds was short-lived due to the club’s financial struggles. These issues caused Swallows to forfeit two matches last season, one against Arrows and another against Sundowns.
Following his release from Swallows in December, Komphela rejoined Golden Arrows in March. He took over a team struggling under coach Mabhuti Khenyeza. Komphela’s arrival stabilized Arrows, leading them to a respectable ninth-place finish. Notably, he secured his first win with Arrows after a streak of 11 winless games.
Back at Sundowns, Komphela admits he never lost sight of the reigning league and African Football League champions.
“I must hasten to say that I am privileged to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns,” said Komphela via Sundowns Youtube Show.
“Even when I was out there, my eyes were always here because the work that is done at Sundowns is appealing.
“Whether you are outside or inside, you are bound to look at it. We are just looking forward to the season and with the changes it is obviously going to be a moment of new developments.
“In any team development there are five stages which are the forming, storming, norming, performing and then excellence. At the beginning there is going to be a bit of a storm and it is normal because I am taking a seat that was occupied by you and it is feeling uncomfortable.
“The same energy and vibe from our people, the success of Mamelodi Sundowns is institutional, these are the people who brought us the Champions League star and we are blessed to have them.”
While Sundowns are currently on a European tour, the transition under Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi hasn’t been flawless, with the team losing both tour matches so far.
