Mofokeng Uncertain About Pirates’ Future

Relebohile Mofokeng, Orlando Pirates’ rising attacking midfielder, remains unsure about his future with the club next season.

Mofokeng solidified his reputation with a dramatic last-minute winner in the Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium last Saturday. The 19-year-old skillfully maneuvered past defender Bongani Zungu, slotting the ball between his legs before finishing past Ronwen Williams in goal.

His teammates erupted in celebration after the dramatic goal, a rare victory against the dominant Sundowns. Mofokeng became an instant hero, mobbed by his teammates after securing a come-from-behind victory.

“Those decisions belong to the chairman (Dr Irvin Khoza),” Mofokeng responded with a laugh when asked by Sportswire about his future with the club. “It’s not up to me, and I don’t want to speculate.”

Mofokeng’s impressive season included a training stint with English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers late last year, though no transfer materialized. Recent reports also linked him to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, the current CAF Champions League holders and home to South African star Percy Tau.

His strong form earned him a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria on Friday and Zimbabwe on Tuesday. Mofokeng finished the season with a solid performance, featuring in 38 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and contributing six assists.

Mofokeng credited his coach, Jose Riveiro, for his development this season. “He constantly advises me on my game,” said Mofokeng. “He emphasizes the importance of defending, not just attacking. He’s been crucial with individual sessions to help me improve.”
